If you’re suffering from hair loss, you're in good company. An estimated 80 million adults in the United States share your struggle. But just because hair loss is common doesn’t mean you have to accept it.
As medical professionals, the experts at Leading Edge Dermatology, with offices in Plantation and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, are committed to offering their patients the most advanced and effective treatments, including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. This innovative treatment uses components from your own blood to promote hair regrowth.
PRP utilizes a high concentration of platelets taken directly from your blood. Platelets are naturally rich in growth factors, which are special proteins that signal the body to heal and generate new cell growth.
During your appointment, we start by performing a standard blood draw from your arm. That blood is then placed into a special device called a centrifuge, where it is spun to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the red blood cells. The concentrated serum is then injected back into the sparse areas of your scalp. The injected platelets activate the dormant hair follicles to stimulate a healthy growth cycle.
Since this procedure uses your own blood, the chance of adverse side effects is minimal, limited mainly to potential minor soreness or a slight chance of infection at the injection sites.
A PRP appointment typically lasts less than an hour. Since it’s not a surgical procedure, there is essentially no recovery time required. You can resume your daily activities immediately afterward.
To initiate hair growth, most patients initially receive a treatment session once per month for the first three to six months. After we confirm new growth, we generally suggest a follow-up "booster" treatment every six months to help maintain your results over time. While visible growth can be seen as early as 1-2 months, it can take as long as six months to see a benefit.
Most adults, including patients with androgenetic alopecia, who are in good overall health, are candidates for PRP. Those who are completely bald are not likely to experience any benefit. Patients with active skin conditions such as skin cancer or pre-cancer, as well as certain systemic diseases, should not undergo PRP.
